Short answer: swabs and urine are the workhorses for many STI nucleic-acid amplification tests (NAATs); finger-prick capillary blood is convenient and often concordant for selected markers such as HbA1c; a venous blood draw remains the reference approach for many chemistry panels — especially analytes easily distorted by hemolysis, such as potassium and AST.

Swabs and Urine: Built for Many STI NAATs

Fit: match the method to the biomarker — NAAT STI testing to swab/urine,[1] remote A1C/lipids to validated capillary workflows where evidence supports concordance,[2] and hemolysis-sensitive chemistries to venous blood.[3]

How to Choose Before You Buy a Kit

Read which specimen the lab actually validates for each analyte. If the panel mixes A1C-friendly markers with potassium- or AST-heavy chemistry, ask whether capillary results will be reported, suppressed, or flagged when hemolyzed.[3] For STIs, confirm FDA-approved self-test vs. mail-in self-collection and whether your exposure sites are covered.[1] When results will drive urgent decisions, default to clinic collection.
