Generic vs. branded, and off-label use — know what you're looking at.

Finasteride and dutasteride are FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss at specific strengths, but many providers offer them in custom-compounded strengths or combined with other ingredients that fall outside the original approval. Minoxidil, whether oral or topical, is used off-label for hair loss regardless of provider — it's FDA-approved for high blood pressure and topical scalp use, not oral hair regrowth specifically. A transparent provider will state clearly, for every product it sells, what's FDA-approved for hair loss, what's compounded, and what's prescribed off-label — not blur the line with vague marketing language.

"Starting at" prices often exclude the add-ons.

The advertised number is frequently just the base tablet or topical solution — before daily hair supplements, combo formulas, or accessories like dermarollers get added to the cart. Before comparing two providers, add up what you'd actually pay for the regimen you'd realistically use, not just the cheapest single SKU on the page.

Formulation strength matters as much as the ingredient name.

"Finasteride" and "dutasteride" aren't single products — dose ranges vary widely between providers, and topical minoxidil concentrations can range from around 2% to 7.5% or more. Higher strength isn't automatically better — it usually means a stronger effect and a different side-effect profile — but a provider that doesn't disclose the strength you're actually getting is asking you to guess at something that materially affects your results.

Shipping cadence and pause/skip flexibility affect real-world cost and hassle.

Some providers ship monthly, others quarterly, and the difference changes how much you're billed at once and how easy it is to adjust your order if your routine changes. A provider that lets you pause or skip a shipment without cancelling your whole subscription gives you more control than one that doesn't.

Cancellation terms vary more than you'd expect.

Some providers let you cancel anytime through an online account.
